Goals
UC San Diego Health, an academic health system with a mission of providing extraordinary patient care through commitment to the community, groundbreaking research and inspired teaching, asked Christian Davies to assess energy use at Thornton Hospital in La Jolla in order to make the case for improving their metering system and hiring an Energy Manager.
Solutions
After collecting data on energy consumption at Thornton Hospital, Davies proceeded to benchmark energy consumption at the medical center against similar properties in the United States. Davies was able to identify significant room for energy savings, and designed a submetering plan for the hospital that would allow them to track energy use from HVAC systems, lighting systems and radiology departments. Davies also created a plan for an LED upgrade, and he identified a free energy audit opportunity for the hospital.
Potential Impact
While the advanced meters themselves will not directly reduce energy consumption, they could provide facilities staff with all the tools necessary to manage their energy consumption moving forward. The meters will also allow for measurement and verification of savings resulting from energy-efficiency investments, such as the LED upgrade, a project which is estimated to save Thornton Hospital at UC San Diego Health 69,200 kilowatt hours annually.
