Summary

Morgan Halstead helped Northrop Grumman develop a new tool for standardizing data and streamlining the tracking of project opportunities.

Goals

Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions in autonomous systems, cyber, C4ISR, strike, and logistics and modernization to customers worldwide. The company’s global footprint inlcudes office complexes, IT infrastructure, and specialized manufacturing facilities. By setting new greeNG environmental sustainability goals in 2015, specifically greenhouse gas emissions reductions, Northrop Grumman has shown comitment to advancing energy efficiency within their operations.

The primary objective of Morgan’s 2016 EDF Climate Corps Fellowship at Northrop Grumman was to analyze energy efficiency within the Aerospace Systems sector and develop a standardized process for project calculations and tracking. This standardization was needed to streamline the evaluation process and improve the ongoing tracking of project opportunities.

Solutions

Morgan coordinated with corporate and sector greeNG program leadership to examine existing in-house analysis tools, spreadsheets, calculations, and methodologies. Building off the progress of the company’s energy professionals, Morgan worked to incorporate previously identified initiatives, enterprise-level requirements, and new metrics for enhanced analysis and data tracking. In collaboration with stakeholders, he developed a new tool that will standardize energy efficiency calculations, streamline the tracking process, and offer additional capability when analyzing projects with high capital requirements and longer payback periods.

Potential Impact

As Northrop Grumman continues advancing energy management and greenhouse gas reduction techniques this tool will have the potential for enterprise-wide expansion. It will provide enhanced visibility and consistent datasets for analyzing the business case, environmental impact, and proven effectiveness of various projects. With better data and an optimal tracking process, deeper energy efficiency analysis can be conducted, resulting in greater gains for the environment and Northrop Grumman.
