Summary

Kara Jones helped Mack Trucks increase energy efficiency at the Mcungie assembly plant, making use of retrofits and on-site solar generation.

Goals

Kara Jones was brought in to identify energy savings opportunities at the 1 million square foot assembly plant in Macungie, Pennsylvania.

Solutions

Jones worked with the facility’s cross-functional energy team to evaluate past recommendations, identify new opportunities, conduct financial analyses and move projects towards implementation.  Jones analyzed several opportunities to save energy and produce renewable energy onsite: installing occupancy sensors in approximately 100,000 sq. ft. of commercial office space and locker rooms, retrofitting parking lot lighting with solar LED systems and generating solar power onsite. Finally, Jones supported final preparations for Superior Energy Performance certification following the Mature Energy Pathway. To become certified, the facility must implement the global energy management standard ISO 50001 and meet requirements to achieve energy performance improvements. 

Potential Impact

The facility is expected to earn platinum-level certification September 2013 by demonstrating a more than 30 percent improvement in energy performance from 2002-2012. The two lighting projects could save the plant more than $20,000 in annual operating costs with a net present value of approximately $132,000. The two solar photovoltaic arrays could generate more than 164,000 kilowatt hours per year with a net present value of approximately $168,000. In total, the projects could save more than 300 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
