Summary

Thomas LaPoint recommended projects that could help Dallas Community College District meet its commitments to the ACUPCC.

Goals

Thomas LaPoint was engaged to help Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) conduct energy audits at each of the seven colleges that comprise DCCCD. The seven colleges have committed publicly to reduce energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions by signing the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC)

Solutions

LaPoint worked with members of the facilities council, sustainability team and energy committee to assess their needs and help reduce energy use at each college. LaPoint has helped them by recommending the following projects: adding vending misers to vending machines, installing power-saving software on computers and removing lamps from over-lit areas. LaPoint also recommended collaboration and education projects such as creating an online utility tracking platform and forming college energy teams.

Covering more than 4 million square feet of building area and connecting more than 30 members serving on energy and sustainability teams posed a challenge during a time when many staff members are unavailable or on summer vacations. LaPoint worked to overcome communication barriers among the largely independent colleges and to promote districtwide adoption of best practices and successes that individual colleges have achieved.

Potential Impact

If implemented, LaPoint's projects could save DCCCD an estimated $2 million and reduce carbon emissions by over 4,000 tons.
