Goals
Goksenin Ozturkeri was hired by Colgate-Palmolive to look into the economic feasibility of installing fuel cell technology at its Global Technology Center facility in Piscataway, New Jersey. In addition, he was asked to develop a management strategy guide for Colgate’s new electric vehicle charging stations.
Solutions
Ozturkeri created a financial model to forecast cost savings and environmental benefits of the fuel cell technology. He interviewed the facility staff to understand the primary goal of having on-site electricity generation and tailored his recommendation to management accordingly. Ozturkeri developed a comprehensive workplace charging program covering installation, management and employee engagement. He also developed an excel toolkit to determine the charging price.
Potential Impact
Ozturkeri preliminarily identified over $900,000 in electricity bill savings over ten years through leasing the fuel cell technology, which has the potential to reduce the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions by 1,360 metric tons per year, or about a 14 percent reduction. In addition, Colgate could increase its operational resilience in one of its largest data centers against power outages and natural disasters. Meanwhile, the electric vehicle charging program Ozturkeri developed has been approved by management and has the potential to be implemented at other Colgate sites globally.
