Summary

Shawn Lindabury examined employee engagement practices at one of CA Technologies’ new locations and helped expand the efforts of the local “green team”.

Goals

Last year, with the help of EDF Climate Corps fellows, CA Technologies achieved its ambitious 35% carbon reduction goal five years ahead of schedule. Despite its tremendous success, the sustainability team found that many employees are not engaged in, or aware of, the company’s sustainability work. To help increase employee engagement, CA Technologies brought in EDF Climate Corps fellow, Shawn Lindabury, to do an employee engagement pilot at its newly acquired office in Boulder, CO.

Solutions

Shawn identified ways to support the local green team in its employee engagement efforts. The green team had already implemented a successful zero waste program and wanted to expand its efforts to address energy and transportation. After interviewing various stakeholders, Shawn set out to help the green team increase composting and recycling, reduce single occupancy vehicle commuting and decrease energy use. His duties included:

  • Researching behavior change and employee engagement best practices
  • Working with the green team to set a goal for increasing composting and recycling by 5% and asking all employees to pledge to help achieve this
  • Applying for grant funding to install an electrical vehicle charging station
  • Performing a night audit to identify devices that are left on, as well as actions employees can take to reduce energy use
  • Collecting data on employee commuting patterns and compiling information on sustainable transportation options available to employees

Potential Impact

At the end of the fellowship, Shawn presented a series of employee engagement activities and a recommended plan of action for the Boulder green team to adopt the following year. He also documented and presented best practices and recommendations to the CA Technologies sustainability team. CA plans to use the lessons learned to launch an expanded employee engagement pilot program this fall to over 20% of the company’s 11,000 employees. If successful, the program will be expanded globally to all employees.
