Shu Saito
Shu Saito spent his summer as an EDF Climate Corps fellow at CA Technologies, headquartered in Islandia, New York. CA Technologies is one of the world's largest information technology management and solutions companies, globally operating nearly 140 offices, including four data centers.
While CA had already undertaken several successful energy use reduction initiatives over the past five years, including EDF Climate Corps in 2010 and 2011, Saito identified several opportunities to reduce energy use further.
His suggestions included turning off, de-lampling and replacing atrium space lighting, rescheduling air handling unit (AHU) operating times, adjusting chilled water temperature, and optimizing the settings on variable frequency drive pumps. Several AHUs, for example, ran twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in small areas such as a security monitoring room. By installing room-specific air conditioning units in such spaces, large AHUs could be turned off earlier in the day, because few employees stay in the building after 6 p.m.
Saito’s analysis showed that for an initial investment of only $8,200, these projects could save CA $158,000, nearly 2.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 1,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
