Summary

Sudhanya Banerjee worked with BSC to measure progress in global energy management and develop strategies to address its carbon neutrality goals by 2030.

Goals

BSC, a global medical device company, has achieved greenhouse gas emissions reductions through energy efficiency, renewable energy and carbon offsets as its sustainability strategy to move towards carbon neutrality. BSC enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Sudhanya Banerjee to conduct the energy management maturity modeling surveys and vet suitable companies to implement global climate offset projects.

Solutions

To determine the best strategy for energy management Banerjee benchmarked all sites, interviewed energy managers at each of BSC’s global manufacturing and distribution sites to survey energy management maturity practices across all sites to identify improvement opportunities.

Banerjee researched carbon offsets to identify carbon compensation projects and organizations that best align with BSC’s environmental and climate goals. Turning his attention to energy and emissions data he vetted organizations that provide energy and environmental audits by measuring, tracking and validating environmental performance of other organizations to promote sustainable energy strategies and actions.

Potential Impact

Banerjee recommend projects are essential to understand individual site performance on energy management and benchmark progress in the future. The results from the energy management maturity survey will be useful in preparing budgets and plans for new energy projects and set key performance indicators for each site. The carbon compensation project will help BSC to seek out the expertise of different organizations to successfully implement global carbon offset projects to achieve their carbon neutrality goals by 2030.
