Summary

Katie Grote developed and tested an energy efficiency toolkit for event organizers.

Goals

The America’s Cup Event Authority in partnership with the San Francisco Department of the Environment hosted Katie Grote as its 2012 EDF Climate Corps fellow to investigate energy savings during events.

Solutions

Grote developed an energy efficiency toolkit for event organizers during her fellowship. The toolkit suggests policy changes and implementation tactics such as mapping stakeholders, modified reporting and suggestions for supplier and vendor contract language. It also suggests minimum requirements for energy procurement and onsite energy generation.

Grote tested the toolkit during the August 2012 America’s Cup World Series event in San Francisco, monitoring temporary power generators every two hours during the event to develop an energy baseline and identify efficiency opportunities for future America’s Cup events.

Potential Impact

If accepted by San Francisco’s Department of the Environment, Grote's toolkit could be used by major events throughout the city, improving energy efficiency and reducing associated emissions, electricity costs and fuel costs.
